Campaign To Curb The Cowboy Clampers

The Daily Mail launched it's 'Curb The Cowboy Clampers' campaign yesterday, calling for an end to clampers who routinely tow away cars before charging the owners penalities of hundreds of pounds. Unlike on public roads, people who are fined or clamped whilst parking in private car parks have no right of appeal, effectively making clamping legalised robbery.

As AA president Edmund King says:

"Cowboy clampers have been getting away with legalised mugging for too long. It's a Government-backed licence to print money.

It is outrageous that a private company, whose income may be directly related to the number of clamps put on vehicles, can demand huge sums from motorists, who may well have committed no offence or infringed no parking conditions, which then must be paid before a clamp is removed.

"It is quite wrong that there should be financial incentives for private companies to go round clamping vehicles."

The Daily Mail is calling for a host of new regulations to be put in place, in particular:

An independent tribunal to hear the appeals of people who have been clamped whilst on private land.
Maximum fines brought into line with the current limit on public roads, resulting in an end to £500-plus fines.
Towing away vehicles should be banned unless the vehicle is a hazard.
Private clampers should no longer be offered incentives to hand out fines.

The final demand does appear to be unlikely to be accepted given that many councils still reward their parking attendants with incentives if they reach certain targets. However, if the Daily Mail keeps the campaign going then it looks like we could see an end to the cowboy clampers.

The Wimbledon Tennis Championships start on Monday and we've got many private parking spaces available in the area.

Most of the spaces are normally available for long-term rental arrangements but owners of spaces which aren't currently rented are likely to be more than receptive to good offers for one-day parking.

With parking at Wimbledon always scarce and highly priced at this time of year there's a good chance that a private rental is the most convenient and affordable option.

FA Cup Final Parking

With the FA Cup Final less than 3 weeks away we thought we'd bring your attention to the number of parking spaces near Wembley which are currently available. This year's showpiece is between Chelsea and Everton at 3pm on Saturday 30th May and with a sell-out guaranteed parking is sure to be in high demand.

Ensure that you get a space by contacting owners owners now - at this point in time parking is available in 45 separate locations around the Stadium. Many owners have also displayed their phone numbers on their ads so you could potentially have a space within minutes.

Received a Parking Ticket Recently?

If you've received a parking ticket recently it's worth checking over the ticket carefully.

Over in the US hackers have been duping people into visiting their fraudulent sites by putting fake parking tickets on cars. The tickets direct users to a website where they are then tricked into downloading a virus.

As anti-virus analyst Lenny Zeltser says:

"Attackers continue to come up with creative ways of tricking potential victims into installing malicious software.
"Merging physical and virtual worlds via objects that point to websites is one way to do this. I imagine we'll be seeing such approaches more often."

What starts in the US often makes it's way over to the UK so next time you receive a parking ticket it's worth thinking twice before visiting any websites that are mentioned on it.

Rugby League Challenge Cup Final

Bizarre Parking News from around the UK

It seems that the green bandwagon is all very well and good until it starts costing councils money, so in London electric cars' exemption from parking fees is to be scrapped because it's become "too successful". Needless to say, Electric car manufacturers aren't too happy about this:

"The City's decision has nothing to do with improving the environment and everything to do with short-term financial gain," says Julian Wilford, co-founder of electric vehicle company Nice.

On a similar note, Westminster Council has scrapped free motorbike parking, this time apparently because of a shortage of spaces. Interestingly at the same time parking fees in Westminster car parks have fallen to 20p an hour in an attempt to bring back the motorists. Something isn't right there.

In Barnet the council has introduced a 'Pray and Display' scheme. Many motorists would argue that that's what they do when they park in London but this scheme is to allow religious leaders to park for free when on business.

Elsewhere in the UK, in Manchester "super wardens" have gone on patrol armed with the ability to hand out fines for parking and anti-social behaviour.

Finally, a Derbyshire farmer who hasn't visited London for 45 years has been fined for parking his vintage tractor in Wandsworth. The tractor hasn't left his Barn for 14 years but the council is still insisting that they caught it illegally parked 150 miles away in Wandsworth.

One Week Until The Wimbledon Tennis Championships

Yesterday was a record high in terms of the number of parking space enquiries going through the site so be sure to check back regularly to see whether anyone has been in touch.

A quick round-up today of our picks of some of the newest parking spaces that have become available. If you're looking for parking near Wembley Stadium there's a new space located at HA9 8HX - just 5 minutes walk from Wembley Arena and at £20 a day it's a good price for what is your own reserved space.

In addition, new parking spaces are available in Westminster, specifically between Green Park and Westminster tube stations.

Moving away from the London focus there's are also some conveniently-located new parking spaces in Manchester which have become available, including one located next to Deansgate train station.

Too many people, too few parking spaces

Research conducted by The London Housing Federation predicts that London will have another 280,000 cars in 10 years time, as a consequence of the city's population increasing by 800,000. The result will be parking spaces in London becoming increasingly difficult to find.

Key views to come out of the research are:

More than 50% of homebuyers in West London would not buy a home which didn't have any parking facilities.
53 per cent of people said that they might give up their car if they lived close to good public transport.
43 per cent of potential homebuyers believe that public transport is unreliable.

One of the key trends in the future could be the increased activity of buying and selling private parking spaces and garages. With many London properties valued in excess of £1 million purchasing a parking space on top of this for an excess £100,000 doesn't seem too extreme.

The New Parking Rules - Potential Money Spinner?

Last Monday the parking regulations in the UK were changed. The official line is that it'll be a fairer system. To achieve this the following changes have been introduced:

CCTV can now be used to issue tickets
Parking on a yellow lines now carries an increased fine
Clamping to be phased out except for repeat offenders

The biggest change is the fact that motorists can now receive a letter in the post requiring them to pay a huge fine for an apparent motoring offence commit weeks earlier.

The possibility for mistakes being made is huge. Suppose you stop on a yellow line to drop someone off... don't stop for too long or the CCTV camera will think you're parking there.

One good move is the reduction in clamping, although the reason behind this is likely to be as much financial gain as it is for a fairer system. Clamping is time-consuming, labour-intensive and expensive. It certainly doesn't compare to a quick new system of sending out fines in the post.

All in all it's good news for councils. If they're a little short of cash they have a new money spinner at their disposal - CCTV parking cameras.

15mph Speed Limits on the Way

New eco towns are to have 15mph speed limits, which will also be enforced on the main roads leading into them, combined with car-free town centres. Don't expect too many visitors.

Housing minister Caroline Flint has said:

"These developments will be exemplars for the rest of the world, not just the rest of the country. It's critical that we get it right - and I make no apology for setting the bar as high as possible. We have a unique opportunity to deliver a programme which will genuinely revolutionise the way people live"

How exactly this would be revolutionary living we're not quite sure. Car-free towns existed throughout the 19th century and before, and people also used to travel around at 15mph. On horseback.

It's incredible how cars are continually targeted yet other high CO2 emitters are overlooked. What about shipping? It's an industry that produces twice as much CO2 as airlines, but escapes any action. Perhaps because it's a low profile industry which wouldn't directly affect people.

But then we have to save the polar bears. Or do we? Polar bear numbers are soaring whilst we have our lives further inconvenienced by ridiculous rules... 15mph speed limits, £25 congestion zone for many vehicles, fortnightly rubbish collections. How long until we have a tax on breathing?

Despite the congestion charge London is still renowned as having traffic problems, problems that are only going to get worse over the coming years.

So what should be done?

The Conservatives believe that the solution lies in adjusting traffic lights as Theresa Villiers, Shadow Transport Minister, has said:

"We will have to look closely at traffic management. The Ken Livingstone way is to actively try to clog up traffic with no commensurate benefit to the pedestrian or cyclist. To tackle congestion we need to look at traffic light re-phasing and getting rid of traffic lights that actually cause congestion."

And they may have a point. Only recently research was done highlighting the benefits of removing traffic lights, suggesting that this would reduce congestion and save lives. Radical thinking but perhaps it's worth a try.

Car parking at hospitals - should it be free?

Recently car parking charges at Welsh hospitals have been abolished, leading to a row between the UK and Welsh Health Ministers.

UK Health Minister Ben Bradshaw believes that it doesn't make sense to "subsidise" car parks when the money could be spent on patient healthcare, although this was countered by Welsh Health Minister Edwina Hart saying

"The statement actually sounds like sour grapes from the Department of Health because they've been probably having a lot of flak because they haven't looked at these issues themselves."

Elsewhere across the UK hospital parking charges vary greatly:

England - parking can cost up to £4 per hour
Scotland - a £3 a day cap on parking
Northern Ireland - similar to England in that local health managers decide on the fees

Westminster Common Sense Parking?

At the end of January Westminster council announced a series of long overdue common sense parking measures aimed at no longer using parking enforcement as a money-making measure.

The new common sense measures included:

- White disabled badge holders now have a month to renew their expired permits.
- Five minute allowance for resident permit holders on single yellow lines.
- Resident permit holders can park in a suspended bay within their own zone for 2 days before being given a ticket.

Unfortunately it now appears that Westminster parking wardens have also adopted a new approach to issuing tickets which wasn't mentioned back in January, namely placing out of order signs on parking meters only to then remove these signs and issue a ticket once motorists have parked there.

Whilst many websites say 'Register Free Today' only to then charge users to do anything once they've registered we are what we say we are. Free is free - advertise your parking space or garage with us and we'll never charge you any fees or commissions.

We haven't posted for a while so thought we'd update you on the latest situation. YourParkingSpace has continued to grow, with an estimated 1,500 spaces available to rent at 730 locations nationwide.

London continues to be by far the most popular area, but available car parking in Manchester and Leeds in particular are also growing.

Meanwhile, our partner site Peasy conducted some research on parking in London, concluding that Westminster is the most lucrative area for renting out a space, closely followed by Kensington and Chelsea. If you have a space in those locations register today, you could be missing out on thousands of pounds a year!

It's been a long time since we wrote an update so here it is. Quite a few developments and in store for both YourParkingSpace and our sister site Peasy over the coming months - details to follow.

But YourParkingSpace will be remaining completely free of charge, whether you're renting a parking space or looking for one. And for a complete hassle-free managed solution you can always pop over to Peasy. We get quite a few enquiries asking how it is that YourParkingSpace is free - with Gumtree being the free version of eBay it could be said that YourParkingSpace and Peasy are a similar set-up, with our sites just having a special focus on parking.

The UK's Shortest Yellow Line

It appears that the area of Highbury can claim the dubious record of having the shortest yellow line in the UK. With the line being only 18 inches long you have to ask why they bothered.

But as the local councillor clarifies it was done in the name of common sense:

"In Islington we take a common sense approach to parking enforcement..."

Belfast to Portsmouth

Here's an update on how things are going - we now have well over 500 different locations in which parking is available, spanning the entire United Kingdom from Belfast to Portsmouth. Things have really been picking up recently, certainly helped by the fact that we're still 100% free of charge - no fees charged or commissions taken.

Road Pricing Petition Deadline

The deadline to sign the petition against the planned vehicle tracking and road pricing policy is fast approaching, due to expire in a couple of hours time. With over one and a half million signatures the questions is will the government listen? Apparently Tony Blair will be sending out an email later this week explaining why he believes in the policy. It could be an interesting read.

But why does no one answer one question. The more we drive the more we pay, achieved through petrol tax. Road pricing would allow variable rates to be introduced but does that really justify spending hundreds of millions, if not billions, of pounds on a tracking system? Or is the real reason that as cars become more environmentally friendly petrol tax revenue will decline greatly, meaning that the government has to identify other ways of taxing motorists?

They have many parking spaces in London available to rent so take a look to see if you can find your perfect parking space, naturally after you've checked our site.

Car Parking Around The Globe

Progressive parking solutions have been making the news over in the US recently, with NewYork's first robotic parking garage being opened. As mentioned in one of our earlier posts, this is seen as the solution in America to the parking problem - we've gone for driveways, they've chosen robots. It'll be interesting to see whether Americans trust a robot to park their car - previous trials have apparently resulted in dropped vehicles and trapped cars.

The US is also leading the way with in-car technology, this time with car parking availability being streamed directly to people's dashboards. How long until we see something similar in the UK? We wouldn't count on it being any time soon. The UK authorities have been busy during the last month doing what they do best... unveiling devices that issue more parking fines, this time in the form of high-tech cars which use a CCTV camera fitted in a periscope. Nice to see that progress is being made.

Back here at YourParkingSpace January has been our busiest month. Parking Awards

Britain's finest parking space was declared last Sunday to be in the Mailbox Car Park in Birmingham. Unsurpringly the worst car parks were located in London, their cause not helped by charging £10 per hour for the privilege of parking in them. At least you now have hundreds of available parking spaces for rent to choose from.

Meanwhile the next generation of car parks is beginning to emerge in the US, as illustrated by the so-call robotic parking car park... certainly an interesting idea.

Global Warming - tax more to solve all?

The environment has certainly taken centre stage over recent weeks with the publication of The Stern Review. The key findings stipulate that we must act now or it'll be too late, perhaps not surprising given that this was a government-backed report. Despite this it is fair to say that the planet is warming up and looking into ways to reduce pollution should be made.

However, this environmentalist frenzy is resulting in some significant oversights. The scientific community that has serious doubts about human's effect on global temperatures is surprisingly strong. Even if the predictions of The Stern Review prove to be true the simple 'tax more will solve all' approach is doomed to fail. Any carbon reduction here will be more than offset by China alone. And what about when African countries begin to experience significant economic growth? It certainly won't be done using wind turbines.

Then there's the motorist. Measures to prevent fuel prices from falling, ridiculous costs to park outside our own homes, and an additional charge imposed for every mile we drive. And yet simple emissions-saving solutions such as car sharing are continually ignored and under-funded, despite the fact that for every additional driver that car shares emissions produced are reduced by half. Maybe the lack of government support for car sharing stems from the fact that it doesn't involve further taxation... the environment only matters when there's the prospect of higher taxes. Or is that just us being cynical?

Escalating Parking Fees

So called 'Gas Guzzlers' are facing a huge rise in the cost of residents' parking permits in Richmond, the home of YourParkingSpace. The BBC have reported that Richmond residents with two high-emission cars could pay £750 compared to the £200 a year currently paid.

It was only a few years ago that parking restrictions were introduced in parts of Richmond, originally designed to help local residents be able to park their car outside their home. It now seems these regulations are being used to prosecute certain motorists, although fairly environmentalists would say. It's sure to create quite a debate if introduced nationwide.

Websites worth checking out

We thought it was about time for a round-up of useful websites for the motorist. With petrol prices falling slightly over the last few weeks you can make even more savings by finding the lowest petrol price in your area. It's free to use, with only a short registration form to fill in. Prices can vary by surprisingly large amounts. At the time of writing, for example, in Richmond (Surrey) the highest price for unleaded petrol was 92.9p compared to the lowest price of 84.9p.

To potentially make further savings on petrol prices check out a company call Pipeline. They work through the logic of bulk buying, with the idea being that substantial discounts could be negotiated with a major forecourt chain if people in the UK come together as one. It's free to join but you'll have to wait for any possible savings to emerge - negotiations with a major retailer are still ongoing. While we're on the subject of petrol prices you could take a look at Petrol Direct - petrol delivered direct to your home at hugely discounted prices. Yes, a hoax it is but they certainly did a good job. The site looks very professional until you start digging deeper.

Finally, if you're more into saving the environment than finding ways to keep your petrol costs low then why not try lift sharing? With over 130,000 members you have a good chance of finding someone travelling in your direction. With that combined with savings on your petrol costs you could have quite a bit of extra cash in your pocket.

It's now possibly easier than ever - simply login and fill out the 'contact the owner' form for the space that you are interested in renting. In addition, it's now no longer possible to spam our members...always a good thing!

...that's right - us! ITV London Evening News' words, not ours! Yes indeed, we made an appearance on ITV last Tuesday at approximately 6:15pm. The merits of renting out driveways were discussed, with a user of YourParkingSpace present as well as ourselves. This was followed two days later by a write-up of the site in the Richmond Informer. Somewhat less high profile we know, but all press coverage is greatly appreciated.

It's been a busy week for us here, culminating in what many of you may have seen. The Evening Standard included an article about us on Wednesday.

Basically it talks about how many Londoners have discovered a nice little earner through renting out their garages and driveways. This is followed by a few quotes from us - we'll have them posted back up here shortly.

Our press appearances did't stop there. On Thursday morning we made an appearance on LBC 97.3 FM's breakfast programme. There may be one or two more appearances in the pipeline, but that's all we're giving away for now.

A Different Way

Take a look at the image of a car park in America. You sure wouldn't want to be parked in the middle of that.

This unusual car park, located in the US, has been brought to our attention. People simply turn up, let the car park attendants know what time they'll return, and their car is parked in the appropriate spot. Not a bad way of earning a great deal more from the space that you have.

We at YourParkingSpace like to think that we have something in common with these car park innovators. Think outside the parking box and renting out your driveway or garage seems like a fantastic idea. Any other ideas out there?

No huge developments or news emerging from the world of parking at the moment, with the summer being notoriously quiet in the UK when it comes to news. We're hoping to change that shortly, more details to emerge over the next couple of weeks.

A quick point of clarification today as we approach the end of July. Joining YourParkingSpace.co.uk is remaining free of charge for the forseeable future, likely to be the next two weeks, after which point the dreaded membership fee may be brought in.

Meanwhile, we hope you all are enjoying the summer sunshine. And to all those currently watching the Big Brother eviction...surely it's time to move on and change that channel. Over two months and they are still in there. YourParkingSpace isn't even that old.

Site Update

Just a quick update today. Our hits are gradually increasing each day, and interestingly one of the parking spaces registered has since become rented out - always nice to see things working out as planned. Over the next couple of weeks things should really start to pick up so, as they say, stay tuned.

Heat and Holidays

It appears that the sun has it in for us this summer, with this adsurd heat here in London. Hopefully through us you'll be able to earn or save some money, in which case a quick visit to Cucumber Man could be in store - an air conditioning unit can be rented for surprisingly little.

There are some who are embracing this heat wave, and no it's not only the huge deodorant conglomerates and the many ice cream van owners. It's also those dreaded environmentalists, no doubt seeing this weather as yet further proof of global warming. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't, but all too often the car driver has not only been landed with the blame, but also villified as if each and every one of them are personally responsible for the destruction of our planet. As over 17,000 international scientists stated when signing the Oregon Petition, from the Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine:

"There is no convincing evidence that human release of carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases is causing, or will cause in the future, catastrophic heating of the Earth's atmosphere or disruption of the Earth's climate."

Not what the environmentalists would have us believe. So if you're tired of hearing global warming mentioned tirelessly coupled with all this anti-driving propaganda, then visit The Association of British Drivers. They campaign for all things good and pro-car.

And for all those organising their holidays at this moment in time, check out how the travel companies are price discriminating through charging some online customers more than others. The moral of the story appears to be, amongst other things, to sort results through 'cheapest option first'.

This is the place to hear about all the latest developments at YourParkingSpace.co.uk, what new features and services will be introduced, and occasional comments about the world of parking.

So what about us? Well, have you ever been walking to work one morning on your far from hassle-free commute, only to look over and see a completely free driveway? Wouldn’t that make a nice parking space? That’s what we thought, resulting in the formation of YourParkingSpace.co.uk.

Recently the war on the car driver has reached epic proportions. Spiraling fuel costs, speed cameras lurking round every corner, not to mention those traffic wardens. We decided it was time to help out our country’s car drivers, so for those of you out there who’d like to find a convenient and affordable weekly parking space, you need look no further. No spaces?
